CHAPTER 7

CENTRAL VALLEY

“Food grows where water flows” read a sign on the side of a truck. That helps explain this journey, where we went from the valley’s rich orchards and vineyards up to the irrigation source at Kernville. Farmers along the blossom trail have little signs telling the fruit trees apart. A good idea, since the blossoms look alike. Only when I took time to paint each one could I see the subtle differences. The road to Kernville is bounded by granite walls and the Kern River. With all that natural beauty, we could tell we were headed someplace special.
